Thoughts on Music, Rock & Roll and Sharing with Your Teens (from the Vampire Mom)
Fall concert season is starting… along with school season and a lot of new music and ideas. This is a time for exploration and discover for kids. Enjoy it with your teens.
Don’t tell me that you hate your kid’s music. Tell me that you encouraged them to branch out and listen to something new. Tell me that they discovered someone you like too. Tell me that you sang along to a song together. Tell me that you talk about music with your teen.
About Teens and Concerts
I get a lot of traffic on this blog from parents wondering if it is OK to take their kids to a Black Veil Brides concert. Yes, it is. Of course it is LOUD and everyone wears BLACK but the BVB band members give a great show. They also give a safe show. And they have a good message. If your child is under 13 I would not recommend it. Concerts are loud and everyone is packed in. But check out their web site and fan pages or CLICK here for my article…

The Light-Bearer Series: Book Review by Mari Wells
Add this series to your reading list.
The Light-Bearer Series by Emily Guido
This is an unsolicited book review.
Lots of love, Emily

The Light-Bearer Series: Book Review by Mari Wells
Emily Guido has a series of Blood Hunters, because they drink blood, I’m going to review the three books I’ve read.
The Light-Bearer Series has a delightful array of angels and blood hunters.I really enjoyed the first three books in the series. I devoured (ha ha pun intended) them in 4 days.
The three novels I read tell us about some very damaged men, life sucks ( ha ha this pun was intended too) and these men know it. Most have lost their soul mates.
Tabbruis Hunter

In Charmeine (book 1), we meet Tabbruis a wealthy man with an appetite for blood. We follow the story as he meets Charleen a teacher who feels like something is missing from her life.

Unorthodox Enfrijoladas
Yum. A beautiful dish. Imagine fixing this with a nice bottle of dry white wine, or your favorite microbrew and taking it out on the deck to dine on a summer evening. This is could be both a “date night” and a “family night” meal.
Enfrijoladas ~ photo by Adam J. Holland ~ The Unorthodox Epicure
Well, these are not really unorthodox, they are actually quite authentic. But this new recipe came to me from my good foodie friend Adam J. Holland, who has a most interesting foodie blog called “The Unorthodox Epicure” with a fun sidebar called “Confessions of an Aspiring Food Snob.” He is neither unorthodox nor snobby, that I can tell. But he’s a fellow Texan and cooks some great authentic Tex-Mex as well as authentic Mexican food, therefore he’s OK in my book, ya heah????
I made these last night, and hoo-boy, were they delicious! My entire family enjoyed them. It took hardly any prep time and cooked up pretty darn quick. That’s a win-win in my book! I halved the recipe since there are only three of us, but it still ended up making 8 Enfrijoladas (although I did add…

Above the hearth – sounds of night
The sounds of life and love…
I hear the clock behind me. It is a Seth Thomas from the 1870’s. So many of those are still running. I can’t imagine living without the sound of a clock and the strike of the chimes. Mine, a model called Atlanta, after the city, only strikes on the hour. It is a mantel clock but it sounds much larger. It sounds huge.
Above the hearth,
The clock lives,
No time to muse on the past,
Or years gone,
Because it is a sound,
That makes babies sleep,
And the mortal quiver,
The sound of night,
And lovers in the light
Of the moon through the window,
Listening to the clock,
The yips of coyotes,
A fan against the heat,
And their own hearts beating,
Then all is still,
As it is with Vampires,
And old clocks
That need to be wound,
And cared for,
Like love,
And memories,
That…

Heart & Soul: Vampires & Ghosts – More Musings from a Vampire Maman
Some Friday Fun…
Clara said “It would be weird living in the White House with tours all the time. I mean, like, it would be weird hanging out at home and having a tour go by.”
I told my 14 year old that the White House was quite large and that I didn’t believe tours covered the private family quarters, except maybe some of the guest rooms like the Lincoln Bedroom. After a bit of discussion I explained that some people believe that Lincoln’s ghost still haunts the place.
“Why would he want to haunt people there?” The child asked. “He wouldn’t want to scare anyone.”
“Haunting isn’t always scaring. But he was murdered and that is why he is a ghost. Most ghosts are those who are killed before their time or murdered.”
More lessons in history.

The Endless Night
You wait at my door…
In honor of World Cat Day

You wait at my door,
Your bite still fresh,
Your cries
Your pleading
Your banging
The scratching
Your love
Astounds me
You will not give up
Fangs set
Love forever
I must let you in
For after all
Despite all
Forever all
I laugh
I smile
I let you in
You are my cat.

Short Story Sunday: The Bully
A story worth taking another look at. All about bullies, growing up and moving on.
The Bully
Sunday mornings on the deck with coffee, a cat purring in my lap, a dog at my feet and my beautiful family still asleep upstairs equals something good. It is all good.
Of course it wasn’t always that way. I think of my kids. I’ve done a lot to make sure they’re strong and secure. I make sure they’re not open to con artists and bullies. I made sure that they learned to stand up for the weak and those who are different.
So why am I musing on such lofty parenting goals? It is because their witty, confident, successful and good looking dad was once the kid who went to school in fear each day because of bullies. Nobody thought anything of bullies back then, when I was a kid. It was part of the school culture. But you know, even as a kid I knew it…

Interview with Author Jim Sellers
For both readers and writers – a wonderful interview of author Jim Sellers. This is one of the best author interviews I’ve read in a while. It is short and so many good points are included.
