Short Story Sunday: Ode to a Greek God

I like this story a lot and I didn’t write anything new today. OK I started something but didn’t finish it… so here you go. Some of you might have read this one before.

Ode to a Greek God

A story by Marla Todd

I’ve been 6000 years at the top of my game. I knew it was too good to last.

I’m having breakfast on my deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean with the perfect amount of salty warm breeze drifting over me. A beautiful redheaded woman is still in my bed and I can still feel the warmth of her skin against mine. Fortunately she’ll be gone in an hour.

Anyway, I’m having coffee and some amazing cheese and apple pastries my son dropped off this morning. I’m also checking out a box Pan had dropped off with the pastries. That’s my son Pan, the famous happy-go-lucky satyr who…

An Open Letter To WordPress

Please, everyone, reblog this.

goldfish's avatarFish Of Gold

Dear WordPress,

I am loath to write yet another letter to you, since I typically prefer spending my time writing actual blog posts, but the thing is, I’ve been bitching to you on Twitter and in your forums to absolutely no avail, so maybe you’ll pay attention to a blog post. It’s not likely, but hey, you never know.

Please, stop. Just put down whatever you’re working on and stop with the futzing. You have been tinkering under my hood long enough and you know what? Not one of the “improvements” you’ve made is actually an improvement at all.

Below, you will find explanations as to why your improvements aren’t improvements sorted conveniently by feature.

Post Editor

First, there’s this “Beep beep boop” editor thing with less than half the functionality or the old editor, which thankfully you haven’t taken away entirely yet. I am waiting for the other shoe…

Playing the Game – Can’t leave anything to Chance

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Some say life is a game. I don’t believe that is a good message for teens but sometimes, on those stupid frustrating adult days when everything seems to go wrong it seems like some stupid horrible game. You know those days when you think “I must have been a really horrible person in a past life.” Sigh.

One of the frustrations about being young (in your teens and twenties) is that Chance and Fate are unfair forces that seem bound and determined to keep us down.

Chance isn’t logical or fair. He picks favorites. He excludes those who work hard. He surprises us with delights. He breaks our hearts and smashes our delicate egos. He devastates. He rescues. He is our best friend and our worst enemy. That said, try explaining that to your teen or college aged kid. Try explaining it to anyone?

And what about Chance’s fickle girlfriend

Vampire Diary: Intervention

Just a little bit of laugh out loud Paranormal/Gothic humor to get your weekend going.

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Dear Diary,

They came tonight to do “an intervention.”

I was told I should not sleep in a coffin anymore. They said it was creepy.

They said, “Vlad, you don’t live in a cobweb filled castle anymore. Stop acting like it.”

The other Vampires treat me like a child or an old person.

Dear Diary,

I went shopping for a bed. The woman in the store said I was cute. I keep hearing that word cute. Cute. My cat is cute. I am not cute, yet they say I am.

I drank her blood in the warehouse. The bed was delivered today. The cat crawled underneath it. I can’t get her to come out. She sits and purrs and stares at me with big green eyes. She will not listen to reason.

The only thing about this situation I can agree with are the black silk…

The Eye Of Gehenna ~ Vampire: The Masquerade, Clan Novel Saga Volume Two (World Of Darkness)

Even if you don’t like Gothic, Vampires or Paranormal – this is absolutely stunning.

Lily Wight's avatarLily Wight

     Updated 15/01/2015

Vampire: The Masquerade‘s role-playing world offers plenty of intrigue and diversity but the chronological re-editing of multiple novels tends to mar an otherwise engrossing series.

Vampire Hesha’s story is over-written and uneventful yet it dominates this second collection whilst the laboured build-up to major events causes structural shortcomings.

With future volumes offering more conclusions and twists this is still a series worth sticking with and a great introduction to the realm of role-playing games.

Vampire Maman 1st Annual Love Letter Contest

When the weather gets chilly we think of romance. February is just around the corner. Be bundle up on couches and cuddle more under the sheets. We look at the clear winter sky and think of loves of long ago. And we think “cold hands, warm heart.”

Anyway, I’m having a love letter contest.

Rules:

Create a love letter. It can be written. It can be drawn. It can be a photograph. It can be a video. It can be whatever you want as long as you consider it a love letter and can post it on your blog.

All love letters must contain these three words:

  • Vampire
  • Prism
  • Portrait

It does not have to be about Vampires. You can write it about your own passion, your love, your longing, or long lost dreams or future entanglements or astronauts or bulldogs or ice…

The Hunter

A short story from Juliette Kings

“We pumped quite a bit of blood out of your stomach. We’re not sure where it came from.”

She heard the words but was the noise in her head was still loud…

“Your heart had stopped beating. You weren’t breathing. You were cold.”

A hospital bed. She was in a bed hooked up to equipment. Her throat hurt.

“We still can’t get your body temperature up to normal and your heart beat is extremely slow.”

She’d been found in a room of an abandoned house wearing nothing but a black silk cocktail dress and black high heeled sandals. The nails on her hands and feet were painted silver. Aside from that there was no jewelry, no purse, no identification. The man she’d been with had received minor injuries and would be in soon to see her. He said he was her boyfriend…

Dear High School Vice Principal: Why is behavior that is illegal in the workplace accepted as normal in our High School?

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Dear VP,

This is a partial post of what I’m going to be sending to you next week. I’m just using my blog to hash out the ideas.

On Friday I picked my daughter up from school but before she found my car I received a text that said, “I’m going to choke someone.”

Since the first day of High School my daughter and her friends have been complaining about the behavior of other kids in the school.

These are smart, normal, nice kids. They don’t fit into any categories. They’re just teens. In their core group the kids are White (6), Black (1), Mixed Race (2) and Asian (1). There are 4 boys and 6 girls in the group. Eight are straight, two are gay. They don’t care what anyone looks like or their ethnic background or who they will one day fall in love with.

They tell me  tell…

Just Hate On The Page

NewspapersBlood on the PageOur hearts are shrinking

Tears have us blinking

Seems no one is thinking.

Just hate on the page.

Why are we reading this?

Why are we seeing this?

Can’t we stop the bleeding?

Just hate on the page.

Love needs to come reign

And wash away this pain

Can’t we once again be sane?

Just Hate on the page.

Where is our rage?

To take center stage

And proudly engage

To get Hate off the page?

An Editorial Opinion from Vampire Maman

Never Be Afraid.

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

I will have my usual Friday post later today after I find something to write about… Of course usual isn’t the word I usually use around here. Maybe “unusual” is more fitting.

This week has been heart breaking and mind numbing for all of us who have opinions and value freedom and have half a brain in our heads.

Then I thought of my own work.

There have been times when I’ve had second thoughts about posting something because I didn’t want to offend someone. I didn’t want to offend anyone because they might leave a nasty comment or them might stop following Vampire Maman.

Well, that was stupid.

Most of the time I’ve posted my offending posts and had a flood of support. I am not alone. You are here with me. You are not alone because I’m here.

I’ve also had people attack me because I write this…

In which the kids are fine, shut up

Love this article.

Luther M. Siler's avatarWelcome to infinitefreetime dot com

A note, before I start: I had to do research and learn what the hell the difference is between Holland, the Netherlands and Denmark before writing this post.  So obviously I am supposed to be writing right now.

Anyway.  This picture’s making the rounds:

tumblr_ngp1r0FJEa1qz6f9yo1_1280Here’s what you’re supposed to do: you’re supposed to look at this picture and go arr wharglebargle kids these days yarr, and be all mad.  In case you don’t recognize it, that painting on the wall back there is Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, which isn’t actually called that officially but whatever.  The idea is that these kids– who look, to my eyes, to be maybe eighth- or ninth-graders, are in the presence of Priceless! Artwork! and instead of reverently gazing upon it they are daring to look at their phones.  Horror!  Terror! Decline of society!  Wharrgarbl!  Facebook is so angry about this, guys.

A Request

djmatticus's avatarStories that Must Not Die

In a recent letter I received from our favorite Jail-Dino, Rara, she requested any and all glimpses of our worlds that we were willing to share, including: “traffic, skies, coffee cups, buildings, kids, art, snowcones, everything.  I want to see the world!”

And!  To make that super easy, there is a wonderful app called freeBird Cards (available through the Google Play store, and probably through iTunes but I haven’t confirmed that – if someone could and leave that information in the comments below that would be greatly appreciated).

Some of you may have already heard about this app, because Grayson posted about it over on Rarasuar a few days ago.  If you haven’t checked it out, it really is as easy as he made it sound.  I installed the app on my phone, selected a picture, input the correct addresses and a personal message, picked which advertisement I wanted to…

I get it, you love to run and you’re killing it every day in preparation for some ridiculously pointless marathon when we all know the real satisfaction you get is from having enviable legs.

I get it, Crossfit has changed your life and you now firmly believe that if everyone did it, they would all be similarly transformed.

I get it, you only eat meat and your diet makes you strong like bull.

I get it, you only eat veggies and secretly wish to lynch bacon-lovers and throttle those who think Vegan is a newly-discovered planet.

I get it, you don’t really want anyone to know exactly what you’re talking about, but feel compelled to get something off your chest, so you opt for irritating ambiguity, your posts so obscure nobody knows whether it’s actually time to orchestrate an intervention.

The battle will be won with words.

The battle will be won with words.

It will be won with drawings.

It will be won with humor.

It will be won by those who will not let evil and intolerance black mail and threaten them into silence.

Freedom of thought, opinion, words, hearts and humor comes first – always.

I think back of those who have been fighting with the pen, the pencil and the keyboard. They are the ones who allow us to be here on our blogs. They are the ones who allow us to live with free thoughts and the sharing of opinions.

My heart is with those who died in France and their families. My heart breaks for all people who are being killed and imprisoned all over the world for speaking their mind and expressing their thoughts – from reporters to cartoonists to musicians to artists to housewives and teachers.

Evil exists but we will prove Evil wrong. We will write. We will draw. We will laugh. We will express ourselves. We will love. We will have our own ideas. We will be FREE.

There is no God in the universe who believes that we should not have ideas and opinions – otherwise we wouldn’t have brains or hearts.
