But He Loves Me

Please welcome Alicia Benton from Imperfectly Perfect with a story of surviving domestic violence. It was originally published on Black Box Warnings, but since that site is gone, we’re reposting it here.

Trigger warning: this post talks about domestic violence. This is not an easy post to read, but it’s an important one and there is a happy ending since she’s still here to talk about it.

He is screaming at me so close to my face that I can feel his spit. I close my eyes and hold my breath.

He is wrapping his hands around my neck and squeezing tighter and tighter. I start to see spots.

He is grabbing my hair and shoving my head in the toilet. I try not to breathe, but I have to gasp for air.

He pulls the car over to the side of the road and demands that I get…

a letter, and an offer, from jail

djmatticus's avatarThe Matticus Kingdom

I got another letter from Rara and, among the other various conversations and trains of thought, she mentioned:

“Does anyone need research material about anything in here?  I could get you the info or contact to a particular inmate.  Car thief, arsonists, bank robbers, escape artists, drug dealers, gang members – you name it.”

Our beloved dinosaur is making friends across the spectrum and, like Pokemon, she’s trying to collect them all.

So, writing a novel or short story and want some insight on something from someone who has lived through a similar scene or situation?  Pass along your questions and/or topics of interest and need and Rara will get the answers for you.  Because she is amazing like that.  Always, absolutely always, thinking about and trying to help others.  That’s who she is.

About those Werewolves…and a short story (for Sunday)

More fun for that Halloween countdown…

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Don't cross a Werewolf. Don’t cross a Werewolf.

Like my brother Max always says, “I have a dog. Why the Hell would I want to date one?” OK that isn’t his exact words. He says “Why the Hell would I want to fuck one?” I like to at least give the pretense of being polite.

When it comes to the subject of WEREWOLVES  we’re all over the place. We meaning Vampires. By all over the place I mean that we accept them, we live with them and from time to time we’re even friends with them but NEVER are we romantically involved (not that we know of). And of course we don’t have big battles in dark woods or dark caverns with cosplay type costumes. We talk out our problems. Otherwise we’d be like Regular Humans, and heaven forbid we be like them. Of course there might be a little occasional growling or biting but…

The Station raided

OK Readers we are ramping up for Halloween – this is the place to get your fun, smart and scary Zombie and Vampire fix…in The City of Zombies.

The argument escalated into a shoving match forcing Kali to stand nearer the dead lying on the floor.  She stared downward at the torn skin and dark rolling blackness that seemed to grow underneath it.  The blood seemed darker then normal human blood but also thicker.  It seems to amass like a pillow under the broken jaw of the zombie.

Outside the windows of the garage door Kali could also see the argument.  The black leather wings lashed in many directions till a shot echoed through the garage.  A set of wings suddenly stopped and disappeared.  A prominent voice echoed loudly.

“Alright, enough!”  It said as Kali watched a taller vampire appear within the windows.  It was taller then the others and upon it’s face was a hockey mask.  “We now have two seconds to get upon that roof and destroy this human station and every human within it.  Now move!”

  • What book have you always wanted to read, but haven’t? Why?The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
Until 2012 I had not read him (I read The Pearl last year and LOVED it). I had no notion of Steinbeck and the physical book didn’t look appealing, maybe also because the blurb talked too much about his success and not enough about the book. The hype I guess.

Philosophers v.s. Teenage Boys and Other Musings on High School

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

High School is better this year – in 10th grade.

My 15 year old is still complaining about bad behavior and stupid classmates but not quite as much as last year. She also continues woefully about being sold down the river in Middle School. Yes, the Montessori promise did not pan out and her school did not teach the kids all that they promised so the kids were unprepared and a lot of them unsupported in their efforts to get a good start in the right classes in high school. That was something I did not expect either.

This year my brilliant child is frustrated by her English class. She hated her teacher last year (who thought she was some sort of dark goth girl) and this year English proves to be almost as bad. The teacher seems annoyed when she asked questions and never gives clear directions. If you…

No one knows that better than Flynn and Charlotte, they fell in love at first sight but the world seems to be against them. Flynn has been having nightmares and they are starting to cross over into reality. No one believes Flynn and his therapist decides it would be best if Flynn spends a little  time in a mental hospital, where he meets Charlotte.

Charlotte is half human, half somnali and is the daughter of the Greek God of erotic nightmares,  Brash. Being somnali means that Charlotte can enter dreams and prey upon humans, causing them to die in their sleep. Nyx, The Greek goddess of the night, knows that Brash’s children are killing humans and decides to put a stop to it. She states that if Flynn survives the torture from the somnali, she will grant Brash’s family more power, but if Flynn…

Get-what-you-give-giving-back-picture-quote1. Be KIND . . .

If I am not kind, then I should expect to be treated badly.  It may not be today… but it may be a time when I really need it.

2. Don’t be HAUGHTY . . .

I am the first person to say that I am not the expert in anything.

3. Read other Author’s work without an AGENDA . . .

No one in the world wants to be pre-judged. You have a genre that you feel comfortable with, that’s great. However, branch out and test the waters with other genres without any judgement. You will be happy you did!

If you talk to a person, you don’t walk away during mid-sentence – that would be rude. Don’t do that to your fellow Authors!
