Halloween Hotties: Weird Tales

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Weird Tales (1923-1954) was known for famous writers such as Lovecraft.  But most of us remember it for the racy and really fun and totally sexist covers. I’m sharing a few in case you need any ideas for Halloween costumes. Um, some of these gals don’t have much in the way of costumes but use your imagination.

I love this stuff!

From Wikipedia (a fun fact): In 1933 Weird Tales hired the former fashion designer and illustrator Margaret Brundage to produce the magazine’s cover illustrations, making Brundage the only female cover artist of the pulp era. She created many striking images, especially of nude or semi-nude young women in provocative poses (her whipping scenes attracted the highest attention). Though her art was far from flawless, Brundage’s covers became a focus of extreme attention and controversy—which of course helped to sell the magazine.

Halloween Hotties is a regular October 2013 feature…

Tucked away

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Tucked away in the shadows of the night, we gather together with dim lights and candles.

Our faces bright and alive. I’ll catch a smile or a laugh. Even when it is only us we’ll still be holding our collective secrets close to our hearts.

There are those times when we want to be separate from the rest of the world, and just be us without pretending or hiding.

Of course at home I don’t even think about it. Most of the time none of us do. Then again, sometimes the isolation makes all of us a little somber. A little colder and a little bit more hungry.

He is best known for his starring role in Dracula, but this Vampires favorite Bela Lugosi movie is the 1945 film The Body Snatcher with Boris Karloff. Now THAT is a great movie. And creeeeeeeeeepy.

Short Story Sunday: Sunsets and Ginger Ale

I’m delighted and honored today to feature a story from my friend and fellow WPaD author Jade M. Phillips. Enjoy!

Sunsets and Ginger Ale

“What do you miss most about life, June?”

I turned to look at Harold, his face an exact replica of how I’d always remembered him: kind, loyal, trusting. I played with the hem of my dress in thought.

“I’m not sure. That was so long ago. I hardly remember what it was like to be alive. But I guess I’d have to say the sunsets.”

Harold nodded.

“I remember sitting on the veranda and watching the sun sink below the mountains. How the clouds would turn into soft vermillion and rose-petal pink and the air would become still. I miss the calm and the purity of that moment. I guess I’d have to say sunsets is what I miss most about life.”

I turned again to my…

Out in the orchard

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Out in the orchard she stood in the dark yelling at the ghosts to leave.

He stood on the veranda next to me shaking his head. “I don’t know. She is obsessed by them.”

Leaning against a wicker chair he closed his eyes.

“You ok?” I put my hand on his shoulder. It seemed a little skinny – more than normal. “When was the last time you ate?”

He shrugged his shoulder. “Sometimes I think Eleora is losing her mind. Do you see any ghosts out there?”

“Two in the pear tree. They’re just sitting, ignoring her.”

“I can’t get her to come in. I can’t get her to leave so we can eat. She doesn’t want anyone over or delivery.”

“You should have called me earlier.”

“I didn’t know it would be like this. I love her no matter what but I had no idea she’d change like this.”

Demons

Sometimes you just need someone who understands…

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Last weekend I was at my brother Max’s home in the city, San Francisco. My husband Teddy and I were there. 15 year old Clara was at her grandparents who live within walking distance from Max.

Note: Halloween is almost here (along with my birthday) so I should be writing some laugh out loud posts. Thank you to everyone who IS writing funny things because I truly appreciate it. Thank goodness for those funny quilt blocks I posted earlier today. Anyway, it has been a long and busy and emotionally draining month… but we managed to take a break. Yes, even Modern Vampires like us need a break. We’re not disgusting blood sucking machines like in the movies. And please forgive any typographical errors or less than wonderful writing. I’m writing fast just to get this down before the idea escapes my head, like a ghost in the night.

Max, for…

Today was my last day in my current job position. I’ve gotten the honor of being promoted out of the gas station locale and into the corporate business world. It’s a step up, and an exciting opportunity. Turns out that exciting isn’t quite the right word…I find this entire scenario is bittersweet. I’m very happy to be promoted. I’ll be making a lot more money and I won’t be doing any physical labor during my work day. Life will get better. But, it means I have to say goodbye to all the people, customers and coworkers alike, that I’ve developed friendships and acquaintance-ships with. Final farewells have taken me a few days to complete. Some of the vendors that come in to drop off shipments of Coca-cola or Pepsi, Frito-lay and others I only see once or twice a week, normally. While certain customers only come in on certain days…

Oktoberfest Brown Butter Noodles

I had to reblog this. Yum. Easy to make too. This is what we’re having this weekend.

Oktoberfest Brown Butter Noodles Oktoberfest Brown Butter Noodles

My office held an Oktoberfest potluck for lunch this week, and I brought this side dish to the event. The company provided bratwurst and sauerkraut with spicy brown mustard, while the employees brought German side dishes. Oh, and they also served root beer. (Hey, it was lunchtime! I doubt we’d have many productive employees the rest of the day if they served German beer!)

This is a quick and easy dish and makes a great side to almost any meal! Since unsalted butter is used and there isn’t much else to add flavor, you will definitely need to season it up with salt and pepper, and perhaps even some Parmesan cheese if you like. Brown butter is traditionally (in Germany) served with Spaetzle, but I used pasta as a shortcut since I had to make this after our dinner the night before the potluck. No time…

All Hallows Eve

A tale of a girl, Gothic romance masked with dreams of freedom and equality.

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

On a crisp October night,

Eve, a girl of singular beauty and spirit,

refused as the 5th daughter to marry

a man

not of her choice.

It was a good match,

for someone else,

but not for her.

The thought of living under his roof,

be it in luxury,

made her think that she was

nor more than property

or a child

or something other than herself.

The idea of him touching her

or going dying in childbirth

like her sister

made her ill.

All Hallows Eve All Hollows Eve

So lovely Eve, the dark eyed girl with the musical laugh, walked out into the night to the old church yard. There she met the nephew of her neighbor, a young man with golden hair and happy blue eyes. He dried her tears with a rose scented handkerchief and told her that her fate was hers.

Eve said she would marry him…

A Poem by Coyote Poetry

"

Last freedom is the mind. Can’t control the mind completely. Always hope hiding somewhere.

"

Utopia of the pen and the paper.

In the sixties. There was a good dream.
We support to be working 32 hours a week and enjoying art, poetry and music by the year 2000.
The Utopia dream fell apart by poor decisions and incompetent leaders.

Utopia had become a forgotten dream and word.
People believe work is life. Life is work. People had become like cattle waiting for the slaughter by
a government that had lost control.

The media is controlled.
A waiting list for men and women taking the chance on war than finding work in a desperate times.

Poor kids are looking for answers and reasons to try.
The USA flag bleed of distaste for peace and poor young people pay…

Feeling Like a Blue Moon on a Red Moon Night

Ghosts and the like…and sometimes it just gets you feeling blue in a way…

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

I walked through the massive building feeling like I was in a cattle yard or an insane house of horrors or just lost.

The years have taken me through market places all over the world. Places of odd smells and sounds with weird paths and turns that have had me lost for hours.

Yesterday I was in a fog under ceilings with strange gray light, thick air, narrow isles and too much for me to take in or want to take in.

I was bringing flowers to a friend in the hospital. I needed a vase. I stopped at a HUGE Wal-Mart by the hospital. It was two stories and it was nuts. I never get hot. In fact I tend to be cool and level-headed at all times, but with the temperature almost 100 degrees F outside and me… well, me being a creature who naturally shuns the bright lights…
