halloween countdown 10 final

Today, August 22nd, is just 10 Fridays before Halloween.

Show your love of Halloween and drive your friends crazy by sharing the above image on your social media sites this week.

The signs of the season are starting to appear! Yesterday, I noticed a Halloween issue of a women’s magazine on a grocery store rack and today I bought a bag of prominently displayed candy corn at Target 🙂

I stayed up waaaay too late last night, updating this week’s countdown post. I got sucked into learning more about monster models in particular. There’s a whole new section about “Monster Scenes” and the controversy surrounding them when they were first released. (Hint: they were banned in the USA, due to their sexual and sadistic flare.)

I’ve added some fresh knitting & cross stitch patterns for the season. I’ve also double-checked all the existing links, and redirected or modified as necessary, so that all…

How to Make a Tasty Low-Salt Chicken or Turkey Broth

This one is from my favorite food blogger. There is SO MUCH SALT in everything. Make your own. Make it fresh. Make it healthful. Make it GOOD.

This post gets a 5 out of 5 stars from West Coast Review.

anotherfoodieblogger's avataranotherfoodieblogger

As promised, I’ll share my secrets to making a soup base from chicken or turkey, that is both low salt and also deliciously rich and eye-pleasing. Well, there aren’t really that many secrets to it, but a few extra “ingredients” can go a long way in stocking your freezer with plenty of tasty soup stock in the months ahead.

When my husband was told quite a few years ago he had to take high-blood pressure medicine and go on a low-salt diet, I knew it was time to get serious about not using pre-processed canned or packaged items, including any form of chicken bullion. That went right out of the cupboard. Many years before that, though, I did make homemade chicken broth, but on a very irregular basis, and half the time I would forget about those containers in the freezer until they were so ice-crystal laden and freezer burnt…

Called to Serve

Wonderful post. It will make you think and think again…and I hope it will make you smile.

Gregory Patrick's avatar

I was knitting a short while ago. Surprise! Yes, if you know my schedule, up at about 6am, make coffee, grab needles, go. I often listen to the radio while I’m knitting, no matter where I am. Sometimes music, sometimes talk radio. A short while ago, I heard the press conference of Dr. Kent Brantly, the doctor with Samaritan’s Purse who contracted Ebola and was now being released from the hospital, clean and cured. But, there was something he said in his press conference that caused me to sit back, put the needles down, and reflect. He said, and I’m paraphrasing mind you, that he and his family had moved to Liberia for a two years stint because they were called by God to serve and at the time Ebola was not on the radar.

And I kept doing my best to connect with that idea, “….called to serve.” But…

Do You Judge An Author By His Or Her Genre?

Interesting article… and oh so true.

Vashti Q's avatarThe Writer Next Door | Vashti Q

You’d be surprised how many people make assumptions about authors’ personalities based on their works’ genre. Horror writers have dark, twisted minds and are capable of committing the atrocities they write about. Erotica writers are perverts. Writers of romance tend to be like their heroines—beautiful women who are lavished with flowers, candy and romantic dinners by more lovers than they can handle (and who all resemble Ryan Reynolds, Zac Efron, Gerald Butler, or Idris Elba) And comedic writers––well, they’re all clowns who don’t take life seriously enough. Really? Come on, people!

I have lost count of how many times friends and acquaintances have been shocked when they find out that I write horror and dark fantasy. “But you don’t look like a horror writer,” they say. So what is a writer of horror and dark fantasy supposed to look like?

Is this what I'm supposed to look like? Is this what I’m supposed to look like?

We writers…

Why something simple like hanging a spoon on your nose is important (to a Vampire Teen)

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Since the invention of metal spoons humans have been hanging spoons off of their noses. Really. I kid you not.

My son Garrett (almost 17) told me that most of his regular human friends and their families hang spoons off of their noses. They do it at birthdays, around the table at major holidays, in study groups and anytime there is a gathering with food and friends. They hang spoons.

“I can’t do it mom,” my son told me with a sad frustrated look.

“What’s going on?” His father had come into the room.

“Why can’t Vampires hang spoons off of noses?”

“Is that important?” Whoops Dad you said the wrong thing.

“I’m sick of not being able to do things that my friends do. I’m tried of not fitting in.”

Neither my husband or I even asked our son to list those things that Vampire teens can’t do.  Being…

halloween countdown 11 final

Today, August 15th, is just 11 Fridays before Halloween.

Show your love of Halloween and drive your friends crazy by sharing the above image on your social media sites this week.

I’m heading out the door in a few minutes to have an adventure. My Ogre has the day off, and the weather is glorious — it’s a perfect summer day. Part of the reason for these early countdown posts is to remind us to really enjoy these remaining weeks of summer before autumn arrives. I’m not yet sure what we’ll do, but it’s likely I’ll spot an old graveyard on the side of some road and my beloved will indulge me while I explore. In the next day or two, I also need to find a local grave to adopt for the season.

Now is the perfect time to seek out lovely old cemeteries. Those that are well-treed are…

Thoughts on Music, Rock & Roll and Sharing with Your Teens (from the Vampire Mom)

Fall concert season is starting… along with school season and a lot of new music and ideas. This is a time for exploration and discover for kids. Enjoy it with your teens.

Juliette Kings's avatarVampire Maman

Don’t tell me that you hate your kid’s music. Tell me that you encouraged them to branch out and listen to something new. Tell me that they discovered someone you like too. Tell me that you sang along to a song together. Tell me that you talk about music with your teen.

About Teens and Concerts

I get a lot of traffic on this blog from parents wondering if it is OK to take their kids to a Black Veil Brides concert. Yes, it is. Of course it is LOUD and everyone wears BLACK but the BVB band members give a great show. They also give a safe show. And they have a good message. If your child is under 13 I would not recommend it. Concerts are loud and everyone is packed in. But check out their web site and fan pages  or CLICK here for my article

Books 1 to 3

The Light-Bearer Series: Book Review by Mari Wells

Emily Guido has a series of Blood Hunters, because they drink blood, I’m going to review the three books I’ve read.

The Light-Bearer Series has a delightful array of angels and blood hunters.I really enjoyed the first three books in the series. I devoured (ha ha pun intended) them in 4 days.

The three novels I read tell us about some very damaged men, life sucks ( ha ha this pun was intended too) and these men know it. Most have lost their soul mates.
